Municipalities of Central Tripoli, Souq Al-Jomua, and Hay Al-Andalus warned of paramount dangers of the sewage network that is leaking into general health and the sea.

In a joint statement, the three municipal councils said that the Sewage Company said that the filtered sewage in the city does not exceed 6%, adding that most of the sewage treatment plants are in dire conditions.

"We are constantly obliged to direct sewage into the sea right away." The Sewage Company was quoted as saying by the statement.

The statement added that 1.380.776 m³ of sewage is pumped into the sea on a daily basis and the treated sewage of all of that amount is only 85.000 m³ a day only.

"All beachgoers must be aware of the fact that the sea water along the three municipalities is not swimmingworthy; in other words, it is contaminated." The statement added, saying the sea water is not good for making ice or desalination.

They explained that there are 27 outlets pouring sewage directly into the sea, which is a violation of the natural and chemical standards.

The three municipal councils urged the General Authority of Sea Resources to assume its responsibility by taking the needed measures to repair and develop the sewage treatment plants in order to meet up with the growing number of the population.
