Tadrart Acacus is a World Heritage Site, well known thousands of prehistoric cave paintings, dating from 12000 BC to 100 AD, and its alien-like, jagged landscape of bizarre basalt monoliths, towering granite mountains (the highest point being 1506m), endless wadis, and mushroom-shaped rock formations. The rock-art sites of Tadrart Acacus are found in a vast area of desert landscape around the town of Ghat in south-western Libya.

Pompeo: US to support lasting ceasefire, holding elections in Libya

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington will support Libyans to consolidate a lasting ceasefire as per Geneva agreement and hold elections on December 24, 2021.

Pompeo's remarks came in a letter in which he extended best wishes for a joyous Independence Day to the Head of Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sairraj and to the Libyan people, according to a State Department statement.

Sirte-Jufra Operations Room of the Libyan Army under the command of the Government of National Accord (GNA) said its forces "are on alert for any possible attacks by Khalifa Haftar's forces on the Sirte-Jufra contact line as they continue to mobilize in the ceasefire area."

Security services in Bani Walid free Egyptian hostages

Security services in Bani Walid Municipality have managed to free 13 Egyptians after they were kidnapped from the city's outskirts a few days ago.

Abdel Hakim Musa Hafeez, head of the Information Office of the Bani Walid Security Directorate, said in statements to The Libya Observer that the freed hostages were of Egyptian nationalities and were kidnapped from the highway four days ago, noting that they confirmed they infiltrated Libya illegally.

USAID-sponsored project holds workshop on managing municipal own source revenues

The USAID-sponsored Libya Public Financial Management project (LPFM/Bab Al-Tamkeen) has conducted two workshops on the drafting of municipal Own Source Revenue (OSR) budgets for 2021 in Sabratha and AL Bayda.

The organizers said that the workshop, which took place between 16-17 December, aims to enhance the capacities of municipalities to promote the development of budgets in a manner consistent with realistic revenue projections that are time-bound and customized with each municipality’s context.

UN head appoints Canadian Georgette Gagnon as Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Canadian Georgette Gagnon as Assistant Secretary-General and Resident Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya.

The spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said that Gagnon will succeed the Sudanese Yacoub El Hillo, whose mission ends on the 5th of next January.
