AU urges members to evacuate nationals from Libya after drowning of 57 persons

The African Union (AU) Commission calls on Member States to expedite the evacuation and return of their respective stranded citizens in Libya after the death of 57 of African nationals off the coast of Al-Khums in Libya.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of the unfolding humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean Sea,” AU said in a statement on Thursday.

UN experts: Mercenaries must leave Libya to allow elections in December

Independent UN human rights experts said on Friday that the continued recruitment and presence of mercenaries in Libya is impeding “progress in the peace process” and an obstacle to upcoming elections, calling for their “long overdue” departure.

The Head of the UN’s Working Group on the use of mercenaries, Jelena Aparac, nine months after the ceasefire agreement calling for withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya, mercenaries and private military and security contractors continue to operate in the country.

Guterres welcomes opening coastal road, calls for holding elections in December

The Secretary-General of the United Nations had welcomed the official opening of the coastal road, in the presence of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), effective 30 July 2021.

In a statement on Saturday,

Antonio Guterres said the opening of the coastal road is an important and long-awaited development for the people of Libya.

Saif Muammar Gaddafi, son of Libya's former ruler overthrown in 2011, has announced- as the New York times says- his intention to re-enter politics.

The New York Times claimed its columnist Robert Worth interviewed Saif last May inside a closed complex in Zintan city, about 136 kilometers southwest of Tripoli.

The newspaper quoted Saif Gaddafi as saying "I’ve been away from the Libyan people for ten years. You need to come back slowly, slowly like a striptease."
