Tripoli Criminal Court has sentenced 11 employees of a bank branch in Tripoli to varying prison terms after finding them guilty of embezzling 29 million Libyan dinars from a government-linked account.

The employees, all working at a branch of the National Commercial Bank based in Tripoli Central Hospital, were convicted by the Criminal Court of the Tripoli Court of Appeals.

The funds were allegedly taken from an account designated for certified checks issued through the bank agency.

The court handed down the heaviest sentences—13 years in prison—to the first and second defendants, who were also stripped of their civil rights and legal status. Three others were sentenced to eight years, while four received four-year terms.

Two female defendants were given lighter sentences: one received two years in prison, while another was handed a one-year sentence with the execution of the sentence suspended.

In addition to the prison terms, all defendants—except the one with the suspended sentence—were ordered to repay the full embezzled amount. The court also imposed a collective fine of 58 million dinars.

The first defendant will also see several of his properties confiscated, including a residential building in the Al-Zuhra district, an apartment in Abu Hreida, and land plots in Hay Al-Andalus and Gurji.
