The Antiquities Inspection Department of Shahat in eastern Libya received the head of an ancient statue found by a citizen in Gandula area, southwest of the city of Al-Bayda.

According to the Libyan News Agency, the chief of the museums department in the Tourist Police and Antiquities Protection Department, Ismail Dakhil, received the head of the statue from a citizen who found it in an agricultural piece of land in Gandula.

After finding the head of the statue, it was handed over by the emergency department to the Tourist Police Department, which in turn investigated the circumstances of the incident and received it.

The Libyan News Agency cited the Director of the Antiquities Inspection Department of Shahat, Adel Boufajra, as saying that the statue was part of a large group of antiquities that were found in the area this year. He added that the recovered antiquities are often unidentified and precise details about them have not yet been determined due to their different shapes and sizes.

It is believed that the head of the statue is part of the front wing of the ancient tombs in the area, and it dates back to an ancient period in Libyan history, according to Boufajra, who noted "increasing awareness among citizens in the area about the importance of protecting antiquities."

He praised the citizens’ continued cooperation in delivering the pieces they find to the relevant authorities in a safe and rapid manner, which he considered a contribution to preserving the cultural heritage for future generations.
