The deputy governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL), who is assigned the duties of the Governor by the Presidential Council, Abdel Fattah Abdel Ghaffar, promised to pay public salaries within a day or two, and distribute liquidity to banks after reviewing cash balances.
This announcement came in a press conference held by Abdel Ghaffar Tuesday, at the headquarters of the Central Bank in Tripoli, during which he sent messages of reassurance to citizens, the international community and international financial institutions regarding the work of the CBL, especially in light of the controversy accompanying the change of the governor, and the assignment of a new board of directors for the CBL by the Presidential Council.
Abdel Ghaffar pledged not to delay the payment of salaries in the future, and to work with the relevant parties so that the transfer of salaries is automatic without delay, sending messages of reassurance to the international community and international institutions, saying: "We work according to transparency and disclosure standards, and our goal is to develop and modernize the CBL and its working mechanisms."
"We now have a central bank that works with a collective mind and a board of directors," he added, pledging to work on unifying the bank, opening banking clearing with all commercial banks, in addition to correcting the situations resulting from what he described as "the previous administration's inflexibility in handing over its duties."
"We assure Libyan citizens that the problem will be resolved within the next two days, and if the problem is with me personally, I am ready to step down, but I will not accept disrupting the interests of Libyans," he said.
Abdel Ghaffar pointed out that they made several attempts to take over the Central Bank, but they faced some difficulties, before the administrative handover and takeover process took place, stressing that it took place "smoothly, and no lock or key was broken, no office was opened by force, but rather it was all done by available means."
He addressed Al-Siddiq Al-Kabir, saying: "Hand over the secret numbers (passwords and codes) so that we can only pay the salaries of Libyans, and to protect our assets and investments abroad, and other than that, do whatever you want," stressing that the new board of directors of the CBL has now become a reality. He also confirmed that the new board of directors will extend the deadline granted to withdraw the 50 dinar note from circulation, which ends on August 29th, which was set by the CBL under Al-Kabir.
Abdel Ghaffar expressed his confidence in the cooperation of the Government of National Unity, stressing that "these policies are what will lead the stage not an individual leading it and imposing his opinion on everyone."
