The commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Gen. Michael Langley, said that the command seeks to push Libyans to enhance their self-reliance by building a unified army under civilian control, preserving Libyan sovereignty, and combating illegal immigration and cross-border terrorism.
In his statement before the US Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday, Langley added that competition between security actors in eastern and western Libya affects the country's development and stability, a situation that sometimes shakes global energy markets.
He explained that AFRICOM, through deliberate and limited steps, can support multilateral security integration efforts to enhance conditions favorable to American interests, given that national reunification "must ultimately come from the Libyan people."
