Algeria has secured a seat on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council after competing with Libya in internal elections held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Tuesday.
As part of the 24th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council, Algeria received the confidence of 34 African countries in the third round of voting, while Libya obtained 15 votes, while Morocco withdrew prior to the vote.
Algeria succeeds Morocco in the position, which it lost in 2022, representing the North African region for a three-year term.
