House of Representatives Speaker Aqila Saleh welcomed the UN Security Council’s vote on Thursday to extend the UN mission’s mandate in Libya until January 31, 2025.
Saleh said the decision to extend the mission’s mandate “reaffirms the Security Council’s commitment to supporting the Libyan people,” according to the HoR media office.
He emphasized the importance of the Security Council’s support for Libya’s political process to move toward “simultaneous, free, and fair presidential and parliamentary elections, fulfilling the Libyan people’s desire to determine their future and freely choose their representatives without restrictions.”
On Thursday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until January 31, 2025, just hours before the current mandate was set to expire on October 31.
