Qatar and Egypt have agreed to unify the two countries’ positions on Libya and support the push for a new presidential council while preserving the Government of National Unity headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah after the repeated setbacks that Fathi Bashagha suffered, the Egyptian Mada Masr newspaper said quoting government sources.

Mada Masr added that Egypt had largely supported Bashagha's attempt to overthrow Dbeibah by creating chaos in the west of the country, due to its unease about lining up between the United Arab Emirates and Turkey in their support for Dbeibah.

It also indicated that Egyptian security officials had previously revealed that Ankara and Abu Dhabi supported opposing sides in the 2019 war in Tripoli, but that they increasingly found common ground in Libya and in their bilateral relations.
