Several Libyan presidential election candidates have called on the Head of Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, to declare a state of emergency if the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State fail to reach consensus in 30 days.

The candidates added in a statement that the state of emergency should be for a period of six months until parliamentary and presidential elections are held, urging for considering the HoR and HCS on a break until a new parliament is elected with a mini government ahead of finalizing general elections.

The 21 candidates who issued the statement said the Presidential Council should assume power during the state of emergency without taking over the judicial authorities, which should, as they said, interfere to break the political deadlock that is threatening Libya’s unity. They also voiced support for the initiative of the UN Advisor Stephanie Williams.
