The European Ministerial Council extended Friday, the Operation Sophia in the Mediterranean until the end of September this year.

"The commander of Operation Sophia had been instructed to temporarily suspend maritime activities in line with the duration of the extension, with continuing the search for a solution by the EU member states on the issue of where to disembark the rescued migrants," the EU Minister's Council stated.

The Council also confirmed that Operation Sophia task will be confined at present, on air surveillance to ensure the implementation of the arms ban decision on Libya and to monitor oil smuggling operations, in addition to completing the training of Libyan Coast Guard and Navy.
