Spokeswoman for the European Commission, Mina Andreeva has refused considering Libya as a "safe harbour" to land migrants rescued from the Mediterranean.

Andreeva said in response to a question about an alleged secret agreement between the Maltese authorities and the Government of National Accord (GNA), which stipulates that the Libyan Coast Guard is to intercept migrant boats bound for Malta and return them to Libya, “We have heard worrying reports but we have no details in hand, we, therefore, have no further comment on the matter.”

"I can't comment on something that hasn't been confirmed, the question should be addressed to Malta," she added.

The Libyan embassy in Valetta has refuted news reported by Times of Malta about striking a secret deal with Malta on migrants' interception.
