The German warship ‘Berlin’, left for the Mediterranean from the Wilhelmshaven Naval Base on a mission to monitor the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations (UN) on Libya.
The naval ship ‘Berlin’, is the latest German contribution to the Irini Operation, following the return of the frigate the ‘Hamburg’ to Germany last December.
The EU naval ships on patrol in the Mediterranean have full authority to board and inspect any ship suspected of being involved in smuggling weapons into the country, as a direct consequence of the arms embargo on Libya.
