Greek authorities have announced a significant increase in the number of irregular migrants arriving from eastern Libya, noting that the vast majority of them are young Egyptian men, including a large number of unaccompanied minors.
Ministry of Migration Sources explained to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini that the route, which begins in Tobruk and reaches the southern Aegean islands such as Gavdos, Crete, Rhodes, Kasos, and Karpathos, witnessed a 135% increase in the number of arrivals over the past year.
The sources added that this new wave of migration "represents a complex challenge," given that most of these migrants do not fall within the categories eligible for asylum, as they are not fleeing conflict zones.
