The Foreign Affairs Committee and the Defense and National Security Committee of the House of Representatives have expressed their surprise at Egypt's announcement of its intention to unilaterally demarcate the maritime borders with Libya without prior consultations.

In a statement, the two committees considered Egypt's decision a violation of Libyan interests in the Mediterranean, an infringement of Libya's sovereignty and a violation of the spirit of brotherhood and good neighbourhood, according to the statement.

The two committees called on Egypt to immediately retract its decision, reaffirming their rejection of the decision, which they considered detrimental to the two countries’ historical relations.

The statement stressed that the issue of border demarcation is carried out through negotiations that guarantee the mutual interests of both countries and in accordance with UN principles and laws.
