Mayor of Kufra, Muftah Khalil, said that the city is paying the price for being a major transit point for illegal immigration towards the northern regions, explaining that the security services in the city are unable to stem the influx of migrants.

In a press statement, he clarified that the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency in Kufra lacks the necessary potentials to combat migrants’ flows, noting that the support provided by the Ministry of Interior to the agency is far too short to address these numbers of immigrants due to the nature of the region and the long and porous borders it shares with other countries.

Khalil refused to accuse a particular country of being behind the influx of migrants, pointing out that the issue of migration has become a political issue and a quick way for some for making money.
