Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has warned that Russia may be seeking new strategic footholds in the Middle East, specifically in Libya, and called for heightened monitoring of its activities in the region.

Speaking at a press conference at the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Meloni highlighted Italy's growing focus on developments in Libya. She pointed out Russia’s strong presence in Syria, including a naval fleet in the Mediterranean, and suggested that with the weakening of the Assad regime, Moscow might look for alternative spheres of influence, possibly in eastern Libya.

“This situation certainly requires monitoring,” Meloni said, emphasizing that "Italy is addressing it at all levels."
