irini

Italian Admiral Valentino Rinaldi assumed command of the “Irini” naval operation, which enforces the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations on Libya, succeeding Admiral Stefano Turchetto.

In this regard, the Italian Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, considered this change a “strong message of confidence” from the European Union to Italy and its naval role in the Mediterranean region.

Operation IRINI is considered part of the European Union’s interest in the situation in Libya, as it examined thousands of ships over the past years and monitored 1,480 suspicious flights, in addition to inspecting 25 airports, 16 ports, and oil terminals.
