Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said that he will ask the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres to scale up international intervention in Libya, with respect to the immigration issue.

Conte said Tuesday in an interview with the Italian Corriere della Sera that he will request Guterres to promote and invest in human rights in Libya-based immigration detention centres, so as to ensure that these international protection centres are fit for housing the migrants.

"We consider ourselves in a state of war," Conte added, underscoring that their coasts are under control and that they are seeking ways to strengthen the capacity of the Libyan Coast Guard.
