The Italian Defense Minister, Lorenzo Guerini said that the present Libyan situation is at a high level of complexity, due to the increasing influence of foreign parties, as he put it.

This came in a meeting in Washington with the US Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, at which he stressed that the stability of Libya is a precondition for Italy’s security plans, adding that his country will continue its political efforts to coordinate dialogue between all Libyans and to fully support the work of the United Nations.

Guerini pointed out that Rome continues to fulfil its commitments in Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, whose fragility constitutes serious security risks, adding that it has strengthened its presence during 2021 in Operation Takoba, through establishing a base in Niger.
