The Government of National Unity (GNU) has decried the Egyptian government's move to unilaterally demarcate the maritime borders with Libya.

A statement by Libya's Foreign Ministry said the step violates Libya's territorial waters and undermines confidence in Egypt's declared position regarding its respect for Libyan sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The demarcation of the maritime borders between the two countries should take place through a bilateral agreement that guarantees the interests of both parties and respects the principle of equality based on the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, the statement read.

The Libyan Foreign Ministry called on the Egyptian side to start negotiations on the demarcation of the maritime borders with the GNU.
