Middle East WMD-Free Zone

Libya has chaired the regional working group meetings on establishing a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in Doha, Qatar.

Libya's Permanent Representative to the UN, Taher Al-Sunni, led the recent meetings. The sessions saw participation from Abdulaziz Al-Jabri, Chairman of the National Committee for the Prohibition of Weapons at Qatar's Ministry of Defense, and Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs.

The discussions centred on evaluating the progress made during the four conference sessions dedicated to establishing a WMD-free zone in the Middle East and addressing the challenges faced by the group.

Additionally, member states exchanged views on ways to enhance procedural and substantive aspects and discussed developing a new strategy to keep pace with the recent events and changes in the region.
