The Maltese government announced the interception and confiscation of 23 speed boats which were on their way to Libya, on suspicion of their possible use for smuggling migrants to Europe.

The Maltese media reported that the boats were loaded inside varying shipping containers, which arrived at the Malta Freeport on a cargo ship full of containers on its way to Libya.

The customs administration decided to confiscate the boats, due to the serious issues faced by trafficking, fearing that human traffickers would attempt to use these boats to smuggle migrants from Libya to Europe.
