The Mauritanian Embassy in Libya has clarified that the recent meeting between the President of Mauritania, who currently holds the presidency of the African Union, and Osama Hammad, the Prime Minister of the rival Eastern Government in Libya, was initiated at Hammad's request.
The consultation focused on the upcoming meeting planned in coordination with the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya.
Observers suggest that the embassy's statement was issued in response to concerns over potential backlash from the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli following Hammad's visit.
This comes in the wake of a similar incident where Egyptian diplomats were expelled after Hammad's visit to Cairo.
