The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of National Unity, Omar Katti, has stated that the Libyan-Turkish exclusive maritime areas agreement is an old project, which dates back to before 2011.

“The agreement was ready to be signed, but Libya was refusing as a result of its requirement to add some items, which actually happened in 2008, but it did not find the appropriate time to sign it”, Katti added.

He also indicated that the agreement gives Libya its rights that are recognized by the Law of the Sea and the the Continental Shelf, as it is the largest overlooking the Mediterranean Sea among the neighboring countries, which makes its exclusive economic zone the largest of all.

Katti pointed out that the recent visit of Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias to Tripoli was a “diplomatic mistake,” noting that the blame for what happened lies on the Greek side, and the incident harmed them more than it harmed Libya, as he put it.
