The National Commission for Human Rights in Libya (NCHRL) has condemned the assassination of the Mayor of Misrata, Mohammed Eshtiwi.

The NCHRL said in a statement that the assassination of Eshtiwi constitutes a dangerous sign of a possible return of a wave of political assassinations in order to settle political differences.

“These acts can quickly become amplified in a state that lacks strong security, and breeds in the environment of instability and chaos caused as a result of the proliferation of weapons and the strong control held by armed groups.” The statement read.

The NCHRL requested the Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of Interior to open a thorough and urgent investigation into the assassination to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
