The Commander of Operation IRINI, Stefano Torquetto, has said that IRINI's mission represents a valuable tool for Europe to monitor and support the fight against illegal activities in the region given the continuing political instability in Libya.

This came during a ceremony to change the command of the Operation IRINI in the city of Taranto, southern Italy.

Italian Admiral Fabrizio Rotteri assumed responsibility from the Greek brigade, Admiral Michael Magkos, in the tactical command of the European force operating in the central Mediterranean, according to the Italian Nova news agency.

“The challenges that Admiral Rottery faces today are difficult, but necessary to achieve the mission entrusted to them by the Council of the European Union”, Torquetto said.
