A new maritime shipping route linking Benghazi Port with major ports in China and the United Arab Emirates has been inaugurated, in what officials are calling a major step towards positioning Libya as a regional logistics hub.
The launch took place at the Free Zone Port of Jiliana in Benghazi, attended by government ministers, local officials, and representatives from the Mediterranean Sea Company, which will operate the new line.
The company’s director, Mustafa al-Mahdawi, said the route will enable direct shipping from Shanghai to Benghazi within 25 days, and from the UAE’s Jebel Ali port in just one day.
In a notable environmental development, the company has deployed the UGR Al-Samha, Libya’s first dual-fuel cargo vessel powered by liquefied natural gas and electricity. With a capacity exceeding 7,000 units, it aligns with global emissions standards, Al-Mahdawi added.
