The Deputy Chairman of Presidential Council, Ahmed Maitiq, met with Minister of Planning, Tahir Jahimi, and Minister of Economy, Naser Doussi, to review measures taken in preparation of the state budget for 2018 as well as steps to replace fuel subsidies and setting an appropriate mechanism for adjusting the Libyan Dinar exchange rate. The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, also included undersecretaries of economy and finance, and a number of Maitiq`s advisers, in a step aimed at resolving the many crises experienced by the national economy.

The Deputy Chairman of the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), Ghaith Ali hosted the Deputy Director-General for African and Middle East Affairs of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and his accompanying delegation at the headquarters of the GECOL. The meeting focused on setting the mechanism needed for completion of suspended projects, including West Tripoli, Gulf of Sirte and Zueitina power stations. The Korean delegation also visited the site of the west Tripoli station in Janzur where a meeting was held with the project manager, the director of the station and a number of engineers. According to the information office of GECOL, the delegation then toured the site of the project and was briefed on the equipment of the project, which was maintained by the security personnel assigned to protect it.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Gennady Gatilov, stated on Sunday that Russia is ready to discuss easing the arms embargo on Libya. This comes one day after Foreign Minister of Presidential Council, Mohamed Sayala, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Gatilov said that Moscow is dealing with the issue as a constructive one, based on the reality of the situation in Libya, adding that easing the arms embargo can only be possible after submitting a request to the UN Sanctions Committee, noting that this process is not a quick one depending on developments of the situation in the country.

Eight trucks loaded with UNICEF-provided pre-fabricated classrooms arrived in Sirte on Tuesday. The Media Office of the body tasked to monitor the education system of Sirte, said the classrooms were provided in coordination with the UNICEF, the monitoring body and Sirte Municipality to compensate for the shortage of classrooms after most were destroyed by the war on ISIS last year. The monitoring body stressed that the classrooms have been put in their stores in preparation for distribution to the proposed locations to be of service of the city`s students.

The head of the Russian contact group on Libya, Lev Dengov, said talks regarding the reconstruction of Libya's oil depots by Russian companies will start next year. Dengov told Russia's Sputnik on Wednesday that there are requests from Libya for Russian companies to deal with this issue as they greatly value the qualifications of our specialists and this will be discussed with our companies that can provide such assistance. He added that talks between the two sides in this regard will begin next year 2018.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council said Libya's real GDP grew in 2017. According to a report prepared by the Council on Wednesday, high oil and gas prices supported Libya's real GDP growth, and they expected that growth to remain at the same pace for 2018 thanks to improved prices and fuel production. The report excludes Libya from its forecast of 3.5 to 3.7 percent growth in Africa in 2018 and 2019, adding that it is estimated that African economies have expanded by a percentage of 2.6 with the exception of Libya, which they estimated a growth of 1.7 percent in 2016.

A Libyan Coast Guard patrol has intercepted Wednesday a group of illegal immigrants from African nationalities off the coast of Garabulli town, east of Tripoli. A source from the Coast Guard said the 116 migrants, who included five women and 14 children, were on board a rubber boat en route to Italy. The source added that the migrants are from Mali, Nigeria, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, Gambia and Guinea.

The Mayor of Zliten, Muftah Hammadi, has launched a campaign to renovate historic buildings in the municipality under a project with the slogan “a city without historical buildings is a city without a past.” Hammadi and a team of specialists in ancient architecture visited the historic buildings in the city to start the project and restore a number of buildings and facilities using old fashioned techniques. The buildings included the almtasrpia and the Ottoman kushla building as well as the Italian municipality, old museum, municipality Mosque, court building and the reconstruction of the gardens overlooking these buildings.
