The European Commission (EC) emphasized the need for Operation Sophia to continue in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Libya.
The EC said that Operation Sofia have been successful and effective, reaffirming that its priorities had not changed, notably the dismantling of smuggling networks and rescuing migrants from the sea, in addition to the training of Libyan Coast Guard personnel, and monitoring the implementation of the Security Council resolution on the arms embargo on Libya, according to the Italian News agency "Aki".
The Italian government has requested an amendment to the operating system of the operation, including allowing Sofia's crews to disembark the rescued migrants at other ports than Italy.
