A sludge of oil substance has been detected along vast stretches of Derna's coast east of Libya, killing fish, turtles and washing ashore many other specimens.

The local authorities confirmed that they have set up a committee consisting of several concerned bodies to follow up on the situation after receiving a report about the oil leak.

A helicopter surveyed the area from Bardaa Island in the east to Ras Al-Hilal in the west to monitor and identify the damage and the areas affected by the spill.

There was no official statement about the cause of the spill, but according to media reports, the oil could be coming from the Derna power plant, which contains several storage tanks and a diesel oil dock.
