The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) said on Facebook that an unexpected malfunction in some generating units has left the western and southern regions in total darkness for several hours on Friday.

The company confirmed that its engineers had begun to reconnect the affected areas gradually, starting from the central region, explaining that the blackout was caused by a sudden breakdown of some generating units.

It also blamed some citizens for reconnecting their areas to the power grid by force and not abiding by the distribution process of the load shedding hours.
