The Supreme Court has ruled the decades-old Jihad Tax unconstitutional, bringing an end to mandatory salary deductions that have long been a subject of legal and political debate.
The tax, imposed under Law No. 44 of 1970, required a 3% deduction from salaries exceeding 100 Libyan dinars to finance the Libyan Jihad Fund, originally aimed at supporting global anti-colonial struggles. The fund was later reorganized under Law No. 59 of 1972.
The ruling follows a legal challenge filed by lawyer Ali Al-Senussi Manna, who argued that the tax was outdated and imposed financial burdens on Libyan workers without their consent.
The case was brought against top government officials, including the Speaker of Parliament, the Prime Minister, and the Minister of Finance.
