The UNHCR said it had evacuated 4,242 refugees from Libya to Niger since 2017, and more than 2,300 refugees from Rwanda since 2019.
In a statement, it added that the number of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants detained in official detention centers accessible to the UNHCR and its partners has risen to more than 5,000, including more than 1,300 of 9 nationalities registered with it in Libya.
The Commission added that the number of migrants who were rescued or intercepted at sea and returned to Libya by the end of last August had been more than 14,000 people in 194 rescue operations at sea off the Libyan coast.
