Tunisian authorities temporarily closed the Wazen-Dhiba border crossing following the detention of a Libyan citizen, sparking concerns among residents in the region, according to the media office director of Nalut Municipality, Tarek Al-Azabi.
Speaking to local media, Al-Azabi said Libyan national Ahmed Al-Maqdami was detained after Tunisian authorities found dozens of couscous packs in his possession.
His arrest prompted calls for his release from within Libya, but Tunisian officials declined to comply.
The border crossing has since reopened, and traffic has returned to normal. However, some Libyan travelers remain wary of crossing into Tunisia, fearing similar incidents or potential violence.
Tensions between Libya and Tunisia have occasionally flared due to stringent border controls, impacting trade and mobility.
Local leaders are now urging authorities to clarify the reasons behind Al-Maqdami’s detention and to uphold bilateral agreements ensuring the free movement of travelers.
