The UN Security Council is set to renew the mandate allowing member states to inspect and seize vessels on the high seas off the coast of Libya this month, according to the Security Council Report.
The report, which highlights the migrant smuggling and human trafficking activities in Libya, indicated a 51% increase in migrant crossings to Europe.
According to the UN site, 45% of the migrants departed from Libya, with estimates indicating that over 3,000 people have died in the Mediterranean between 2022 and 2023.
