The United Nations is urging strong support for the gradual withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya, as a UN team of observers arrived in Libya Thursday to support the Libyan Ceasefire Monitoring Mechanism agreed upon on October 8.

"We hope that the international community will offer strong support for the implementation of the Action Plan, including from countries in the region, UN chief Spokesman Stephane Dujarric told a news conference in New York Friday.

According to the UN official, the UN ceasefire monitors will work in concert with their Libyan counterparts assigned by the 5+5 Joint Military Commission, confirming that additional monitors will be deployed incrementally, including in Sirte, once the necessary security and logistical arrangements are in place.
