The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has warned of the serious impact of climate change in Libya on youth and the new generation, saying that children will bear the brunt of the failure of this generation to address the climate crisis in the future.

The organization further explained, in a statement that the effects of climate change worsen water scarcity due to drought, flooding and high temperatures, indicating that Libya is on the higher end of the world’s most “water-scarce” countries, adding that securing water in the long term is an urgent priority for the future generation, as it put it.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Georgette Gagnon, said that Libya urgently needs climate change education, climate laws and civic activism regarding future climate conditions, calling on the United Nations to take action to address the negative impact of climate change on the younger generation of the country.
