The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), reported that 8,074 refugees and migrants had been rescued at sea by the Libyan Coast Guard since the beginning of this year.

The Commission confirmed that the Coast Guard had recovered two bodies some days ago along with the arrival of 45 survivors from a sinking boat at the Tripoli Naval Base, however 22 people remain unaccounted for.

The UNHCR stressed that Libya is not a safe haven for migrants to land in, calling on all countries to strengthen their search and rescue efforts in the Mediterranean sea to prevent the unnecessary loss of life.
