The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has extended the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for an additional year until October 31, 2023 under Resolution 2656.

In accordance with the resolution distributed by the United Kingdom, the UNSC renewed its support for the inclusive political process in Libya led by the Libyans to hold free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections.

The resolution also welcomed the efforts of the Presidential Council to launch the national reconciliation process, calling on all parties to refrain from violence or any other actions that would escalate tensions, exacerbate the conflict and undermine the political process.

The UNSC also stressed the importance of protecting children in Libya, urging all parties to implement relevant resolutions related to respecting women's rights.
