The Deputy Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for Humanitarian Affairs, Maria Ribeiro, expressed her concern over the escalation of hostilities in the eastern city of Derna, confirming that the Mission received information indicating significant civilian casualties.

"Such a very serious escalation would further deteriorate the humanitarian situation in large parts of the city," Riberio stated via her Twitter account Friday, explaining that their concern stems from the fact that basic needs, such as food and water, does not reach the people in need.

She also called for unconditional humanitarian access to affected civilians in the city.
