US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara A. Leaf has confirmed that Washington continues its endeavor, in cooperation with Egypt and other countries in the region, to end the conflict in Libya towards holding elections.

Leaf indicated during her meeting with a group of journalists at the American Embassy in Cairo that the US understands very well Egypt's view of the Libyan issue, stressing that there is a real opportunity for millions of Libyans to elect their government, benefit from the resources of their country, and have a unified army.

“The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, is free to run in the upcoming elections, and if he is not ready to run these elections, he must step aside like others”, she added, stressing the need to implement these steps to bring about the required change.
