The Municipal Council of Central Tripoli has warned about swimming and fishing in the capital's beaches due to contamination.

In a statement on Sunday, the municipality said Tripoli's seawater has become a sewage dump, which raised levels of bacteria.

Tripoli authorities have no choice but to dump the sewage and rainwater into the sea as the city does not have a wastewater collection and treatment system.

"We confirm that central Tripoli beaches are not suitable for swimming, fishing, sports activities, and setting up a desalination plant because of pollutants," the statement warned.

In July, Libya's Environment Protection Authority issued a warning saying Tripoli beaches from Tajoura to Janzour have become landfills for the industrial waste, hospital litter, and human waste.
