The Moral Guidance Department of the General Staff of the Libyan Army reported that the 13th meeting of the naval commanders of the 5+5 Defense Initiative member countries was held in Tripoli with the participation of all member states, except Mauritania, which joined online.
The meeting, which was held Tuesday under the auspices of the General Staff of the Libyan Naval Forces, saw discussions on the current security challenges facing the countries of the Western Mediterranean and ways to address them.
The naval commanders of the participating countries stressed the importance of regional cooperation to confront joint challenges, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining maritime security in the region.
Following the meeting, the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Naval Forces, Noureddine Al-Buni, hailed the success achieved by the meeting and appreciated the participation of all delegations.
The Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Mohammed Al-Haddad, stressed the importance of dialogue, solidarity and cooperation to achieve maritime security in the 5+5 Defense region.
At the end of the meeting, the participants stressed in a joint statement the unification of work to enhance multilateral cooperation activities to confront security challenges.
The 5+5 Defense Initiative, which was established in 1990, includes the countries of the Western Mediterranean (Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Malta, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal), and is concerned with issues of economic partnership, development, and security in the region.
