The global seismic monitoring stations of the Italian National Center for Geophysics and Volcanology recorded an earthquake on Saturday morning off the western coast of Libya.
According to the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences, the earthquake, which occurred at 10:13 Libyan time, measured 4.3 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter of the earthquake is located in the Mediterranean Sea, approximately 178 kilometers northeast of the city of Misrata, and about 347 kilometers northeast of the city of Tripoli.
This area is known for its remarkable seismic activity, as there are some active ground cracks that extend across the Mediterranean Sea and along the western coasts of Libya, according to the Libyan center.
This area has also witnessed many light and moderate earthquakes in the past, including the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred near the coast of Misrata in 2009.
The center indicated that due to the location of the epicenter of this earthquake in the sea and the time of its occurrence during the day; it is expected that it won't be felt by residents of the surrounding coastal areas.
