A grouping of social and political activists, experts, and academics of the Cyrenaica region has declared the establishment of a political and social new body under the name the "High Council of Cyrenaica."

The council explained in its founding statement that its goal is to create a political system that unites the three regions in Libya and provides for the optimal representation of the region in dialogues and committees.

It also calls for building mechanisms that would achieve a fair distribution of financial resources and political representation between governorates and municipalities, according to specific criteria, in addition to providing the regions broad competencies to manage their financial affairs, as well as development and service programs.

"The Cyrenaica region should have real representation in the committee assigned to draft the next constitution, to ensure its constitutional rights," the statement read, emphasizing that regions should be granted broad powers to manage its political and economic rights stipulated in the 1951 constitution, upon the establishment of the Libyan state.

The grouping called for the Cyrenaica population to choose the form of state that meets their national and local aspirations and to regulate their relations with the rest of the regions, insisting that this new political body will serve as the region's high representative in any future political dialogue at the local, regional, and international level.
