Deputy Head of the Presidential Council Mossa Al-Koni has called on those in power to show courage by stepping down and moving toward elections, in response to the video showing member of the House of Representatives Ibrahim Al-Dressi being tortured.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Al-Koni said: “Ibrahim Al-Dressi, were you alive in prison or in a grave—after you gave your life for a dignity you never received? Your sorrowful soul will remain a weight on the chest of every tyrant.”
He added: “To those in power, let us gather what remains of our courage, let us step down with the ethics and nobility of our people, and leave… so that Libya may move toward elections and choose who will lead it to salvation.”
Al-Dressi appeared in a widely circulated video on social media, shackled and showing clear signs of torture. The UN mission in Libya said it had requested UN digital evidence experts to verify the authenticity of the footage.
The mission reiterated its call on Libyan authorities to swiftly conduct an independent and thorough investigation into Al-Dressi's disappearance. It expressed sympathy with his family and colleagues “as they watch this horrific video during such a difficult time.”
