The Deputy Head of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, said that the national reconciliation project is a national one par excellence and cannot be internationalized, stressing in a statement on Monday the need for reconciliation between Libyans to be a purely Libyan act, while respecting the supporting role of international institutions.
Al-Lafi stressed the Presidential Council's keenness on the neutrality and independence of experts, facilitators and participants in the reconciliation file, without imposing any visions or directions on them, reiterating that work on this file is being done in a purely Libyan manner in terms of planning and implementation.
He explained that the national reconciliation file belongs to all Libyans, and the desired results cannot be achieved without the participation and agreement of all parties. He also stressed the Presidential Council's determination to continue with addressing the challenges facing the reconciliation process, in cooperation with international partners, while stressing that managing the file will not be in favor of one party at the expense of another, but rather aims to create consensual mechanisms to build a new Libya.
Al-Lafi warned that if the national reconciliation conference was not held inside Libya, it would be subject to criticism and disagreement among Libyans.
Al-Lafi's statement comes following recent reports that the UN mission and the African Union intend to hold a national reconciliation conference in an African country after the failure to hold the conference in the Libyan city of Sirte last April as some parties announced that they would not participate in the conference.
