The Deputy Head of the Presidential Council Abdullah Al-Lafi said on Friday that the solution in Libya "must be based on true national ownership, stemming from collective will, and expressing common aspirations," considering that this is the only way to achieve the peace and stability that Libyans want.
Al-Lafi's comment came after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Thursday to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya until January 31, coinciding with the expiration of its last mandate on October 31.
Al-Lafi indicated on his Facebook page that the Security Council session revealed a clear divergence in international positions toward Libya, and stressed in this context that "the future of Libya will only be made by the Libyans themselves."
Al-Lafi called on all parties to prioritize Libya's interests above all else, and to promote the spirit of tolerance and enhance trust, saying: "Let us rally around a comprehensive national project that will advance our country, and establish a strong and unified state capable of fulfilling the aspirations of its people, and achieving a bright future for our coming generations."
The UN Security Council resolution stipulated that the mission’s mandate would be automatically extended for an additional nine months if a special representative of the Secretary-General was appointed to head the mission.
It also reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Libyan political agreement signed in Skhirat, the roadmap approved by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, and the updated electoral laws prepared by the joint committee of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State “6+6”.
